New farms, new farming, new farmers

New farms, new farming, new farmers

To meet a vision of a bioregion where organic and regenerative farming practices are the norm, and all the benefits that leads to regarding human and environmental health, there is a need to support those that are leading the way and those that are willing to try new ways of connecting to the land, the crops they grow, the people that farm them and the communities they connect with.

This group of emerging innovations is fundamental to the mission of the BWL and its stakeholders, and yet it is also fundamentally interlinked with the other concepts and cannot be treated in isolation.

In late 2023 and 2024 we have worked in depth to explore three new directions for farming in the SE bioregion. See dedicated page for each for reports, insights and progress.

  1. Deep Demo Dairy – an exploration of how taking a landscape perspective affects how dairy farming can move to a more sustainable future (funded by and part of the ‘Deep Demonstration’ project led by Climate-KIC for the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine).
  2. Our Farm – are there examples of connecting local people to local farms in a way that gives value to farmers, farms and communities? A visit and analysis of if the Herenboeren model of the Netherlands has relevance for replication, after adaption, in an Irish setting.
  3. SFI Diary – a new index that captures every aspect of sustainability. Watch this space!
